Independence day celebrations awaited me in my first weekend in Mexico. Everyone gets Mexico fever, there are flags everywhere and lots of people dress in traditional costumes and the national colours. The most important part of the day is when the president comes to the main square and gives a speech known as the “grito” (the shout). This is supposedly an enactment of when the army gained independence for Mexico and Miguel Hidalgo, one of the main independence fighers, came to the street and shouted “Long live Mexico”. Every area has its own party with its own grito given by the assigned politician of its area.
