For our final few days in Uruguay we decided to go for a well deserved relaxing few days on the beach. The problem with this was that it was raining almost all the time and it didn’t even seem hot enough to get into your bikini. We moved first to Punta del este, Uruguay’s poshest and most expensive beach destination where all the rich Argentinians go. We literally only stayed half a hour as it’s on the way to Punta del Diablo and we wanted to see what all the fuss was about. We discovered an Uruguayan Cancun, with nice beaches, but lots of office buildings and lacking the authentic Uruguayan feeling. We did however see Punta del Este’s famous finger monument which Uruguayan parents scare their children with by telling them that it was a giant that was too heavy and eventually sank into the sand with only the fingers remaining.
Upon arrival at Punta del Diablo we felt like we had gone back to the jungle. It was so humid it was literally impossible to breath and frequent showers seemed futile because being dry was a distant dream at the time. We did however get a few hours of nice weather during which time we scrambled to the beach and spent almost the whole time playing in the waves as the water was so nice. I am usually fussy with my water and won’t go in for too long if the temperature is not right but this was literally just perfect.
In the evening we had the momentous occasion of our final night together. Monika left to south Brazil and I had to get back to Buenos to catch my flight to Rio. Obviously we will be meeting up again in Brazil but even the thought of one day apart was too painful. We had the amazing bottle of wine from Pablo from Santiago that had literally crossed half of South America waiting for a special enough occasion to be opened and this was it. We sat next to the pool in our hostel and had our romantic final evening together, just me, Monika and after a couple of glasses of wine the blow-up dolphin from the swimming pool.
The next day Monika set off for Brazil with a friend we made in the hostel in Punta del Diablo and I made my way back to Colonia to catch my ferry back to Argentina.
