Punto Arenas was our final destination in Chile and although it is quite a pretty place it was relatively uneventful for us. The main tourist attractions in the city are the penguins and the cheap duty free shopping. Because we had already seen penguins in Perú and by this point were running low on Chilean money we gave those a miss and spent the day shopping for my new backpack and a couple of other bits and bobs. We were broken from the trek, each of us had at least two-three body parts in severe pain and we needed a rest so we went out one night and spent most of the next day resting, catching up with family and blogging 🙂
Southern Chile is beautiful and impressively just as developed as the Santiago area so we enjoyed the amazing shopping (including an impressive selection of food products on offer in the supermarkets) and even got a mini tour of the city from our wonderful taxista Raquel. She found out it was our last day in Chile and wanted to leave us with a nice final impression of the country and its people so she drove us to the main viewpoints of the city for free 🙂
Punto Arenas also has a large Croatian community so there were a lot of companies with “Yugoslav” names however we didn’t hang around long enough to meet anyone. The time we spent in Punto Arenas was short but sweet and I was kind of sad to leave Chile as we crossed over to Argentina and headed towards the end of the world.
