Flor is well aware of my obsession with everything cowboy and although she claims not to share my passion (I know secretly she loves it), she’s always been promising to take me to one of the many bars in Chihuahua where real cowboys hang out. This time I got her fellow cowboy loving cousin (as in he appreciates the music, not as in Brokeback Mountain) on board and she couldn’t say no. We dressed up as cowgirls one night and made our way to what can only be described as the coolest place on earth (Disclaimer: opinion of Maja). I say we dressed up, by this I mean I got super excited and dressed up and succeeded in forcing a considerably less excited Flor to don a pair of my cowboy boots. She later admitted that she loved the boots and had no idea they would be so comfortable and make her feel so sexy. She’s probably gona get them for Christmas. If only all my cynical friends back home and my mother could share her enthusiasm.
The place we went to was like a humungous drive in for cowboys, cowboy music lovers and people who had been forced to go by their cowboy obsessed friends. It was open air, you could only come by car and there were various bars around a main stage which had a live band playing cumbia and other northern music styles. You drink beer, dance and eat cowboy food. In case you were wondering, Chihuhuense cowboys eat “Dayvasos”. This is like a beer and tomato juice mixture with lemon and sauces to which they add either shrimp or dried meat. It sound disgusting but it is delicious and I’m not just saying that because I feel obliged to love everything cowboy, beer and tomato juice is my favourite recent discovery.
When the main stage dies down you move to one of the other side bars. We picked the line dancing bar where there’s a real cowboy showing you the moves to various dances. Flor and her cousin agreed I was a natural. It was heaven. I’ve wanted to go to a place like this for ages and it really was one of the most fun nights out that I had in México. Plus I make a pretty sexy cowgirl if I do say so myself 🙂
