So we had done a lot of driving around and we were tired of being on the move so we decided to spend a relaxing day in Campeche and the next day (my birthday) make the long drive back to Cancún. The hotel we were staying in was really beautiful, in the style of an hacienda, so that helped the decision as well.
Campeche is a pretty city, with super friendly people and colourful buildings and generally just colours everywhere so it was nice to have the day to stroll around. We visited a few museums as well and all ate a salad for lunch (a nice salad is a rarity in Latin America and I wasn’t the only one fed up of fried food by this point). The city itself didn’t have lots to do and it even rained a little at one point but people here were so nice that I took away such a lovely feeling about the place. We finished the day with a special birthday dinner and I went to sleep a very happy birthday girl.
The next morning it got even better. I managed to Skype with almost all my family and friends. This included a call at 8am Mexican time to my aunty and granny who were already drunk on the other side of the world with my granny’s friend (yes another granny-this is Eastern Europe we’re talking about) in celebration of my birthday. I even had a present from my family which had been brought over by Stelios and was a beautiful earings and necklace combination I could wear with my new dress bought by Stelios (and trust me when you’re travelling and your wardrobe is your backpack new things are a million times more exciting than back home). But the most exciting thing of the morning was that my boyfriend had organised a wonderful surprise for me with lots of little puzzles and presents that lasted throughout the day. It was extremely thoughtful and just the kind of thing that I love, as if having him with me for my birthday wasn’t enough.
We headed back to Cancún and made only one stop in the village of Becal, where they are famous for making some of the world’s best Panama hats, and incidentally they were in the middle of a hat festival as well 🙂 We stocked up on hats at this cute little family run business where the oldest granny was clearly the boss and bargained hard. But we didn’t have time to hang around because we had to make our way to Cancún to pick up my best birthday present, the arrival of my Steffi 🙂 Besides, all this travelling was exhausting, it was time for some beach and relaxation!
