The art of the tango

So you can’t really do a blog about Argentina and not mention tango. And if you love to dance as much as I do and even learnt a bit of tango in Mexico then you make a whole blog devoted solely to the dance style.

Tango originated from Argentina in the late 19th century. Mainly the dance style came from the brothels found around the ports of Buenos Aires, where European and African immigrants mainly lived. The immigrants were missing home and would come to the brothel for some sweet lovin’ as their main source of entertainment.

The tango is an acting out of the relation of the prostitute and her man. Slow, sexy, sensual, teasing, with the bodies very close and the occasional leg rub here and there, this was super kinky for the 19th century. The music is thought to be a combination of the candombe (rhythms bought to Argentina by the Africa slaves) and the traditional Argentinian milonga music.

Eventually the upper layers of society started hearing about the dance but were too embarrassed to admit it and little by little the tango was introduced into the mainstream. The Palais de Glace in Buenos Aires (seen below) was one of the first places where tango was introduced to the upper layers of society and since then there have been a million variation  of the dance worldwide.

In Argentina the dance is everywhere and in many squares at night people old and young get together just to dance. And trust me there is no Argentinian more attractive then one that knows how to dance tango!
