I just wanted to make a short blog about Mexican beer because I really love it and I never drink as much beer anywhere as I do when I’m here. I am definitely not a beer expert but the most famous Mexican beer in the world is Corona and I personally think it’s shit and there are a lot better beers in México that the world should know about. The two main breweries in México are “Cervecería Cuautémoc Moctezuma” and “Grupo Modelo”. The first was bought by Heineken in 2010 and produces Tecate (probably the most famous in the north), Sol, Dos Equis and my favourite Indio. Modelo produces Corona, Victoria, Pacífico and of course Modelo.
The best thing about beer in México is that it’s frequently drunk in these beer cocktails that I find absolutely delicious and super refreshing. The most common are the Michelada and the Clamato. There are many varieties of both but generally the Michelada is beer mixed with lemon, salt, chile, Worcestershire sauce, Maggi sauce and Tabasco (which FYI is not Mexican but a U.S. invention by a man inspired by a visit to Tabasco). The Clamato is the same but with Clamato juice added. This is a tomato and clam juice which I recently discovered comes from Canada. It may all sound disgusting but don’t knock it till you’ve tried it. It’s available now in a lot of Mexican restaurants in London and I’m bringing all the necessary ingredients with me so anyone who is interested get in touch 🙂 Salud!
