Isla Mujeres

It was now time for Steffi’s and mine adventure to start, except this adventure was less of the hiking and exploring adventure and more of the lying on the beach and relaxing (moving only for food and alcohol) kind of adventure. We researched the most relaxing places on the coast and made our way first to Isla Mujeres, a beautiful island a quick boat ride away from Cancún. Steffi had been working crazy hours and deserved a break and I as a good and loyal friend was accompanying her 🙂

The next two days we stayed in a cute little hostel practically 2meters from the beach and we swam, got massages and ate amazing seafood all day long. There was a massage station right next to our house with this one señora with the most magical fingers I ever experienced in my life.

The island is also famous for its Tikin Xic fish which is Yucatec Mayan for “dry fish”. It is marinated in adobo made from achiote and sour oranges (same as cochinita- a great combination), then wrapped in banana leaves and cooked in an earth oven. The fish used is a firm white fish like a grouper. It looks gross but it’s really delicious.

On our final day we met some Argentinians, one of which fell in love with Stefania and wouldn’t leave her alone for the rest of the evening. In these situations I am usually helpful and empathetic but this time I just sat back and enjoyed the show as he did his Argentinian thing and pestered her while she rejected him politely but firmly all night. I’m glad someone else experienced the “Argentinian mating habits” and I’m sure Steffi can now also back me up that I’m sorry boys but this stuff really doesn’t work and most of the time no really does mean no.

After a couple of days the weather started getting dodgy and there were rumours of a storm coming so we migrated south to the beautiful sunny beaches of Tulum.

Tikin Xic much better than it looks

Argentinians just never give up

Tacos mexicanos are never far away
